The North 80 Foot Repeater Tower
Testing all the new Antennas...

Sunday - November 21st

The work on the tower has been finished and now it is time to start testing all of the new antennas. The first antenna to be tested was the G7-220 at the very top of the tower for the 224.040 repeater. The antenna is a 7 dB Omni directional gain with a special  design for lowest possible angle and maximum efficiency with a low angle radiation for maximum signal.

All the planning and hard work were worth all the effort as the signal from this new antenna is "Monstrous" to once again quote my friend John.

"Having extraordinary often overwhelming size"

The original antenna that we installed on the tower in 1993 was a Diamond X-2200A side mounted at the top of the tower at approximately 60 feet and it was connected with Belden 9913 braded coax. That was the antenna that had been damaged during the Nor'easter that blew through in December of 2008 and got this whole project moving.

The new antenna is a G7-220 that is mounted at the very top of the mast above the tower and it is connected with Andrew LDF4-50 hard-line. The talk out range of the repeater has improved however the receivers performance is dramatically better with the new antenna / hard-line combination.

Here are the VSWR numbers for the new G7-220
FREQ Watts Fwd Watts Rev VSWR
220.00 30 3.2 1.97
220.50 29 2.6 1.85
221.00 28 1.8 1.68
221.50 25 1 1.50
222.00 23 0.49 1.34
222.50 23 0.22 1.22
223.00 24 0.18 1.19
223.50 25 0.18 1.19
224.00 25 0.11 1.14
224.50 24 0.02 1.06
225.00 24 0.015 1.05

224.040 MHz 25w FWD / 0.1w REF / VSWR = 1.14

The second antenna to get some RF was the G7-144 for the 146.460 repeater. This is the same design 7 dB Omni directional gain with a special  design for lowest possible angle and maximum efficiency with a low angle radiation for maximum signal. I have several of these G7-144 antennas deployed at other sites across the state and we have been very pleased with the preformance.

The original antenna that we installed on the tower in 1993 was a Diamond X-500-NHA that was at the very top of the mast approximately 80 feet and it was also connected with Belden 9913 braded coax.

The new antenna is a G7-144 connected with Andrew LDF4-50 hard-line and is now mounted on the south east side of the tower at 50 feet in an effort to reduce the signal strength to the north.

Initial signal reports have confirmed that the repeaters signal has been reduced to the north while the desired coverage area to the south and east have been improved.

Here are the VSWR numbers for the new G7-144
FREQ Watts Fwd Watts Rev VSWR
143.50 40 4 1.92
144.00 75 5.6 1.75
144.50 75 5 1.70
145.00 80 4.2 1.59
145.50 86 3.8 1.53
146.00 92 2.8 1.42
146.50 90 1.2 1.26
147.00 90 0.56 1.17
147.50 90 1.3 1.27
148.00 92 3.2 1.46
148.50 92 6 1.69

90w FWD / 1.3w REF / VSWR = 1.27

More Updates will be posted as each of the new antennas have been tested.
